His and Hers

We do not have His and Hers cars.

We have a small single driveway with two cars parked in it.Β  Whichever car is closest to the street is the car driven by whoever needs to go somewhere.

If, by chance, we both need to be somewhere at the same time on the same day, we each take a car. Whoever gets home first parks their car closest to the house. This means the second car home may have just rotated.

There are definite downfalls to this scenario.  To me, whatever you take into the car is what you take out of it when you leave.  When Bob gets into the car, he packs as if he could go camping for a week.  Food, charging wires, devices, clothes – Bob will never be unprepared.  Since he never takes anything out of the car when he is finished, in theory, I will never be unprepared either.

The second downfall in this scenario, especially since the pandemic hit, is that while we predominately use only one car, the other vehicle lays dormant.  Sometimes, for months.  When it is eventually turned on, the car ROARS to life. Then we cross our fingers that all rolls well.

In the past two months, I have been using our smaller car.  It is excellent on gas and should be the car I use for all my many errands and appointments.  I was pleased to use my grocery rewards for a free tank of gas this week.  I was a little disappointed I couldn’t fill the bigger gas guzzling car for free, but I was there, my little car was there, and we enjoyed a free tank of gas.

In the past two months, I have also scheduled every doctor, dentist, and orthodontist appointment that was canceled, rescheduled after the pandemic, or just now necessary.

I did the dental swagger walking out of the dentist’s office, flaunting my once again cavity-free mouth to the kids.

We all suffered through Declan’s dental visit, where a cavity was mended.Β  I am proud he got through the appointment, but that day was filled with inconsolable screams of, “my mouth feels weird!”

Catelyn held her head in both hands when the orthodontist recommended her for 2 years of braces with rubber bands. However, she was relieved when I had to postpone her braces until Bobby wrapped up his.Β  Paying for two sets of braces at the same time is a little out of our comfort zone.

And after completing multiple tests and more and more follow-up testing, I finally received a clean bill of health.

Those were some long days, but thankfully, those days are over.  The little car and I happily continue to traipse the kids to all of their appointments. Put putting away on my free tank of gas.

Having sat at the back of the driveway in bitter cold weather for over a month, the gas guzzling car did not roll to life when it was finally restarted. It started with an angry screech, then refused to turn or move without whining loudly.

It finally required Bob driving it to the mechanics with both his fingers and toes crossed, while I followed behind in the happy little car in case of a possible breakdown.

Thankfully, we all arrived at the mechanics in one piece.  And as I took the key from Bob to turn it over to the mechanic, I saw the car’s floor was fully loaded with all of Bob’s leftovers.  Shirts, coats, shoes, food, drinks – a car entirely prepared for anything.

Of course, the mechanic said he had to order a part and would have to keep our car for the week, but I know what is really going on: The mechanic is taking our car on a massive camping trip with his buddies as he now has everything he needs.  Bob should be proud!

In the meantime, WE will continue to drive the little car.  Rotating between entirely empty and fully loaded depending on the driver! 😊

  1. It is good that you and Bob balance each other out! I’m with you on the minimal packing part but you’ll always be ready if something were to happen with Bob packing the car! 🀣 Hope you get it back soon. πŸ‘

I hear you on the dentist part. 1 cavity is not too bad but I can only imagine the screaming on Declan’s end. T had dental surgery earlier this year and it was a nightmare. πŸ™„

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. To be honest, I was surprised Declan was so upset. He has had work done before and has even gone to school right after. This time something must have gone a bit different. The screams were practically the whole day. It was tough on all of us. Dental surgery sounds super tough! Yikes!

      Thank you! You too!

    1. That was smart. You get super cold weather too! We had some bitterly cold days with the real feel in the negatives. That makes for some unhappy unstarted cars! We should have at least started it during that time and maybe driven around the block. I just wasn’t thinking!

  2. We still haven’t gotten Ben into a dentist, and he NEEDS to see one. His top front baby teeth never fell out, so they’re still there, behind his permanent teeth. The one time we tried was a disaster, and we were all traumatized.

Thinking about the mechanics going camping reminds me of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off… when the parking guys take the car for a joyride.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    1. Oh, that is tough. I couldn’t get D into the dentist until he was 4 1/2 – and that first appointment was held on the floor. Took another two years to get him into the chair. The dentist is a scary place. I can’t imagine how our boys see it!

Me too! I was laughing about that in my head. If I could find any positive spin on the mountain of “stuff” that can accumulate it was going to be that happy parking guy having the ride of his life! πŸ™‚

  3. Theoretically, we don’t have his and her cars either. But Susan used to take our “better car” to work in Harrisburg, so I drove the junker. All.the.time. Now we have our truck, which Susan is supposed to be driving to work to even out our mileage usage, but old habits are hard to break. Although she decided the other day that she prefers driving the truck, so maybe I’ll wind up driving the ‘old car’ once again. My lot in life. Hope your repair isn’t costly.

    1. Our road to “who drives which car” started very similarly. Who had to go where, how far away did we need to go, which car could handle the terrain or the amount of people we needed to transport – we would gear which care we chose around each decision. But since we married, we have never had “this is my car and this is your car.” When we first met, my car was a stick shift which was a no go for Bob. Literally he asked me why a car would have two brakes? So we went with cars we both could drive and shared the two cars ever since.

  4. I have an SUV and my husband drives a Ford pickup truck. I rarely drive the truck because the seat needs someone with a taller upper body and I have to put a cushion under my bum to feel like Im able to see everything well enough. All of my height is in my legs. I have sympathy for Declan . I find it hard just getting my teeth cleaned!

    1. Our cars are similar except one has the third row for when we have to take all the kids ( and we don’t want to have all the fighting πŸ™‚ ). When I have to take the kids for their appointments I am generally only taking one or two at a time so the third row for a peaceful journey hasn’t been required. If our driveway was big enough that we wouldn’t have to move one car to use the other, I think we would probably claim and drive our own respective cars. Maybe – there are a lot of different factors that come to mind when I have to choose!

  5. My little Mazda 5 is like a woman’s purse – full of everything you might ever want, from grocery bags to a copy of my book, in case I run into someone who wants to buy it. My husband hates driving my car because of all the stuff. Also because he can’t fit in it very well. His SUV has an extra coat in the back seat. That’s it. Well, they both currently have some masks in case we walk out the door without one.
I was upset when I had to get an oil change last week. I take my car to Walmart for curbside pickup and that’s about it. I probably only had 50 miles since the last oil change!

    1. 50 miles! Wow! That is not a whole lot at all!

Oh, the Mazda 5 is close to my heart. We had one when our younger ones were babies. My job was 45 minutes or more from our home and we had the DVD player installed to keep the kids occupied on our long journey to and from work each day. THAT car always had a few extra diapers in it, and some snacks and juice for the kids just in case. It may not have been my car but it was the kids car for whomever needed to take them anywhere! πŸ™‚

  6. What an awesome idea! I honestly use my car on average once a week. My husband does a lot of the running around with the kids after school so I can stay home with my 1 yr old. Sometimes he tells me to take his car since its already heated. The only thing is moving the seat and fixing the mirror every time!

Ahh the dentist. I still need to reschedule the kids and mine since the pandemic! Great reminder πŸ˜ƒ

    1. I know! I got caught with our dogs. Our vet usually sends us yearly reminders for when it is time to schedule their yearly appointment and it took us running out of their heartworm pills for me to realize we overlooked that appointment as well. We have been playing major catch-up so far this year to get back on track with all of the appointments!

  7. I HATED the rubber bands… and the tightenings… and when part of my tongue got caught on the braces…

Let’s just say that BRACES SUCK!

    1. They do! I feel bad for her. Well, kind of. You know what they say about karma! πŸ™‚

Just kidding…I hope she can get through them in less than two years so they suck a little less for her. πŸ™‚
