In the Business of Making Fun Stories

I heard the front door open with a squeak then pulled to a close.

I looked questioningly around the room and went to the front window.  Outside I saw Declan beginning his walk down our driveway.

I opened the door and called, “Declan, where are you going?”

“The Boss wants me to sell this,” he replied, lifting up a container of freshly made slime and continued, “So, I am going to go sell this.”

‘The Boss’ was the title Catelyn gave herself.  While deep in pretend play, the two decided to start a business.  A slime making business.  Since Catelyn had way more experience in the process of making slime, she became ‘The Boss.’  Declan easily acquiesced and dutifully referred to her by her given title.

He also willingly took on the duties of the lesser role.  The one who got ‘The Boss’ her drinks, her snacks and also it appeared, door to door sales.

“Declan, you can’t take that slime door to door and try to sell it to our neighbors.  Anyone with kids already HAS a ton of slime.  And adults probably don’t want it.”

“Yes, they DO!”

I sighed.  “How much are you selling the tub for?”

“The Boss said three dollars.”

I looked around the neighborhood trying to come up with a plan.

“Declan, look!  There is nobody home right now!”  I pointed to each of the houses with empty driveways and told him where each family was.

Realizing I was right, Declan slouched and came back up the drive.

“Uggh,” he moaned, “I got to sell the slime.”

We both walked back into the house.  Declan returned downstairs to meet ‘The Boss’ in ‘The Office’ while I continued my daily chores.

About twenty minutes later I heard the front door squeak open and pulled closed. I looked out to see Declan continuing his journey down the drive.  In one hand was his container of slime, in his other a piece of paper.  I look around the street and saw no neighbors had returned home.

I pulled open the upstairs window and shouted, “Declan, wait.  What are you doing?”

“I’m going to put my slime at Jordan’s front door and leave my note.  Then when she gets home, I will have sold the slime.”

“Hold on, I am coming down.”

I got down the stairs and outside to meet Declan on the driveway.  I read the note in his hand and chuckled.

Before I could think of a way to talk to Declan about business ethics, I smiled, realizing I had one of those stories I am going to love to tell the office duo for years to come.

The note Declan prepared to leave at a neighbors house with a container of slime:

  1. Fun! I hope he collects, or gets his slime back. 😂We used to build “forts” out of miscellaneous stuff in the alleys. I hate to think now of the danger from rusty nails and all the germs from scrounging through trash. Yuck!

    1. He has it! I never let him put it down – when I saw the note telling the homeowner they had to pay him, well, we had to come up with a new plan 🙂 I do love their little imaginations at work though!

  2. That’s one way to sell it! 😂I think this shows Catelyn will go far in the corporate world when she’s older having already assumed the Boss role at such a young age! It also shows Declan has a heart of gold, and very persuasive selling tactics (if only he put ‘or else’ at the end of that note 😉)

    1. Oh my gosh, the “or else” made me laugh 🙂 He knew she wanted him to sell it, so he was going to sell it. She is a very persuasive boss and he is a pleaser – makes quite a business! 🙂 Thanks Caz! xx

    1. She’s very persuasive and he likes to please 🙂 Anytime she gets mad at him anymore she fires him until he makes her happy again and then he gets his job back. At this point, I have bought more slime from him than I know what to do with 🙂 (Although that happened after one slime).

    1. That’s true! He came up with a new plan and acted on it – definitely good problem solving skills.

    1. His note cracked me up 🙂 You’re right! I am so glad the door tipped me off before he got it to a neighbor’s house 🙂

    1. I’m so far behind – I did like your post and songs and added mine. Totally fun to think about!

      1. Ugh! Next week will be even more chaotic, trying to make sure everyone has everything they need.

Go for your runs or lock yourself in the bathroom. We’ll make it!

Rory (Guy Called Bloke) has a picture of a yellow bus and and running countdown to 8/26 on his morning “I just wanted to say” posts. Its sweet and cute and helps to see that number counting down.
