“Where’s Declan?” I asked my husband as he ascended the basement stairs, “His party is about to start. He will want to see the people as they come in.”
“He’s downstairs talking to Spiderman,” he said.
“What?”
“Yeah, he said he felt bad not having a Spiderman party this year and he wanted to talk to him about it. So, I gave him so space. I told him it was time to come up and he said he wasn’t ready yet.”
I gave my “Oh my gosh” expression and my husband continued.
“He’s down there, sitting next to the big toy with his arm around Spiderman’s shoulders. And he’s just talking to Spiderman.”
“Okay, we can wait a few minutes,” I answered and sure enough, in a few minutes the doorbell rang and Declan came up the stairs to start his party.
Declan had a great party. Having become entrenched in deep-sea creatures, I hit Pinterest and we threw him a really fun deep sea creatures party.
From the octopus and jellyfish hanging on the ceiling, to the party food – everything was deep-sea themed.
When Declan was younger I felt like a traveling occupational therapist. My car was loaded with activities to help meet Declan’s sensory needs at the older kids sporting events, practices or get togethers.
One thing EVERY child enjoyed, was the sensory bins I would unload from the car. Bins filled with sand and different textured objects to soothe, maneuver and manipulate.
So I brought the sensory bin out for Declan’s party – deep sea themed!
I filled a great big storage bin with water sensory beads (found here on Amazon) and loaded the bin with deep-sea creatures. boats and toys. The kids loved it. And I will tell you, I found many adults talking out on the deck with hands completely submerged, enjoying the beads through conversations. A huge party hit for all the guests!
There was cake and singing.
And I am happy to say there weren’t any “no thank you’s” to gifts given. If he didn’t like a gift, he only said, “Oh” and put the gift down. And would say “thank you” as he ran away.
This is a side note – I will forever laugh at my husband for holding the piñata on a broom handle while blindfolded children are swinging at it wildly with a baseball bat. Every year! We haven’t had any injuries *yet* so it looks like he will be doing it again next year! (Don’t worry – I will be camera ready!)
The party was fun. Declan had a great time. I think the guests all had a great time. It was a lot of fun. And although it wasn’t a Spiderman themed party, he was there. I am not sure what Declan said to him, but I saw him watching from the floor and think Declan wanted Spiderman to come to his party and to have a good time too. Right next to the “pin the tail on Dory” game!
Now, in Declan’s room he will sleep with his Spiderman stickers and giant Spiderman poster. And also with the fish now swimming in his brand new fish tank.
I am sure Declan will be sure Spiderman enjoys the fish too!
And a happy photo I captured of the big girl hanging with the big 7-year-old as I came down the stairs.
Sounds like a great party!
I was really happy – Declan had a great day and I think everyone that came had a good time too – Yay! 🙂
Wow, what a great day.
Lots of fun – and Declan really enjoyed himself 🙂
That’s brilliant
How fun! 🙂
Turned out to be a great day! Yay! 🙂
I really enjoyed reading about the party, I almost felt like I was there!
That’s great! Thanks Elaine!
The decorations were great!
Thank you so much!
I always sat by my dog for a while after getting over stimulated too when I was little. Animals do so much to help calm us busy humans down! Was heart broken when she died under the cherry tree years ago. She lived a full life and gave birth to several puppies. We kept one gave all the others to good homes (lived out in the middle of nowhere southern IL) lots of family friends wanted a dog like Cindy (part German Shepard part Labrador retriever).
Glad Declan had a good party. Maybe next year Spiderman could just stand inside the front door to guard the house!
I agree – animals do help calm us down. I am sorry about Cindy. Sounds like she was a great dog! Thanks! I think that may be a good place for him too. Today, Declan dressed the part and Spiderman was whipping through the kitchen shooting air webs. Safety has been restored 🙂
Looks like a great party!! I want to try those water beads myself!
They are so relaxing! So many of the adults were out there, just talking over the bin and playing with them. So cool!
