My mom can fold a perfect fitted sheet.
No lie. If you were to look in her linen closet you would see stacks of sheets as if they were still in their department store packaging.
Perfectly folded fitted sheets.
I was intrigued by this wonder and had her teach me. Corner tucked into the corresponding corner pocket. Creases, folds, and wah-lah! A perfectly folded fitted sheet.
After learning this skill from my mom, I was so confident that the next time I was faced with roommates and an unfolded fitted sheet, I boasted about my new talent and began to demonstrate the perfect fitted sheet fold.
The tuck went okay, but then things started to fall apart with the creases and the folds. My fitted sheet ended up the same way it always had up to that point.
Rolled up into a ball and then sat on for flattening.
Wah-lah! Fitted sheet folding at my finest. Folded-ish.
When it comes to the more challenging skills, I seem to operate on an “ish” scale.
Was it folded? Yeah, sort of. Folded-ish.
Did it look nice?
Nice – ish.
On another note – Can I draw a Mario?
It would turn out Mario – ish.
Can I repair a chair leg?
Fixed – ish (just don’t lean forward on the orange chair).
Over the past year, Catelyn has reorganized her room AT LEAST twice a week. Every morning I wake her for school and wonder what corner of the room her bed will be in.
The change is kind of fun, I get it. So, yesterday I decided to rearrange the furniture in my room as well.
Did it turn out well?
Well-ish. Just don’t move the books holding up the ancient bed frame.
As exciting as it was for me, it was less thrilling for Declan.
So put off was he by the new location of his bed, he didn’t sleep.
WE didn’t sleep.
I sent Declan to school regardless of his sleepless night. Throughout the day, I continuously refreshed my email, I held my phone – just waiting for the call or for the message to let me know the obvious:
“Declan is having a tough day.”
The message never came. At the end of the day, I greeted Declan at the end of our driveway where his bus deposited him.
Even through the mask, I could tell he was frowning. As I brought Declan inside, the tears came. When the tears came, the hood to his jacket got pushed back, revealing a great big piece of silly putty squished into the hair on the top of his head.
Unbeknownst to me, Declan took his silly putty to school. He enjoyed sticking the putty to certain things to see their imprint in the putty throughout the day. His final imprint was his last. Declan chose to see what his hair imprint looked like in the putty.
Except the putty never let go.
Embarrassed by his misfortune, Declan had to finish the last bit of his school day with putty stuck in his hair. Letting all the tears out when he got home.
We faced the next challenge through the tears: how to remove the putty from Declan’s hair. After seeing the putty wasn’t moving with a few tugs and trying a few online hacks, the scissors made an appearance. Declan dutifully let me cut his hair.
Over the quarantine I achieved a new skill. Cutting the boys hair. I’m not going to lie – it also started as an “ish.”
Did I cut the boys hair?
Ehhhhhh…. Ish.
Did it look nice?
Nice-ish.
Thankfully, I have gotten the most practice on Declan and know how to cut his hair. The putty was removed.
Declan is now back to himself – ish. After the whole ordeal, Declan took a break in his cozy canoe (a cool little tool that provides deep pressure while he is chillin’). I am hopeful the rest of the night follows a similar vibe.
Sort of, somewhat, kind of, not really but close – these are all my “ish.” My best attempts. I am proud to say Declan’s hair is no worse for the wear. I wish he was smiling but am happy he is no longer frowning. Hopefully, he is more comfortable-ish with the bedroom set up tonight and will catch some Zzz’s. A good night’s rest is just what we need!
Susan rearranges a room in our house about every two months. I admit, they keep getting better, but it’s pretty disruptive to people who don’t like change (me). Typically, when something needs to be fixed in my house, I do it myself, even though I lack the know-how and patience to do it well. There are probably a dozen things in our house that we think are fine that the next owner will need to tear out and start again. Ish is my middle name.
Exactly! There is a sink in one of our bathrooms that I forbid anyone to use. When they ask why I answer, “Because I am the one who fixed it.” I got that thing back together the best I could. It’s fine for company to use, but no need to test it with everyday use. Someday, someone with greater know-how will move in and do it the right way. Until then it is good enough. Another one of my Ish projects.
I hope you all get some sleep tonight. My granddaughter can’t deal with change, which has made this last year hell for them all 🤕
Change is definitely hard. Thank you!
Most people don’t realize that it can affect them for days
I loved rearranging my room as a teen. Was so fun. I can see why Catelyn enjoys it.
And poor Declan!!! With the putty. Good for you for helping him with removing it. 🙂 That is a LOT of putty. When I was in Grade 6, I don’t know how it happened but I threw a gum at a girls hair and she came to school the next day with a ton of it chopped off. Still can’t live that one down.
And I hear ya on the fitted sheet. This is a video tutorial that changed my life! Just ignore the “Taught by a Man” in the title. 😂 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YHTyH2nuFAw
There was a lot! I could get big chunks that were on top out well enough, but there were a lot down deep as if he was trying to dig it out himself and only made it worse. I was worried I was going to have to buzz it down even shorter. At that point, D didn’t care. He felt me tugging on his head was worse than a hair cut. First hair cut he didn’t cry for!
I will have to check the video out. My linen closet is full of wads of fitted sheets. I have seen the light and know a flat fitted sheet fold is possible. It would be great to master such a skill!
A buzz cut would be very apropos for the pandemic! But glad you found an alternative. 🙂
Oh, I’m totally an “Ish” person too. Give me a roll of Duct Tape and I’ll fix it “good enough”😂😂
Declan and the silly putty reminds me of when Older Daughter was about Declan’s age actually and decided to stick her gum behind her ear after watching Willy Wonka.🙄 scissors was the only solution.
Ben used to grab playdoh or that foam stuff at school and smash the whole wad of it onto his pants. In 1st or 2nd grade… why?? Who knows! But he ruined a few pair of pants before we convinced his teacher to keep it put away.🤦🏼♀️
That canoe thing looks cool. Where did you get it?
Declan got really mad at Bobby once and jammed a huge gunk of bubble gum into the front of his hair. I didn’t know how to cut hair then and Bobby was of an age that hair mattered. We sat with peanut butter for hours working the gum out as much as we could and then ended up trimming bits that would not let go. Hair is so unforgiving with the sticky stuff!
I follow a site called Bacon and Juice Boxes and saw that their son, Eric got one. It looked so cool so I found one on Amazon for D. https://www.amazon.com/Harkla-Hug-60-inches-Inflatable/dp/B07KVPRHBN/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=cozy+canoe&qid=1611233251&sr=8-3
So far it has totally been worth it. He comes home from school and gets in, when he wakes up he gets in – it seems to be where he spends all his chill time. It’s nice!
Thanks. I’ve added it to our Amazon list. Remember when Ben had his “jail”?😂
He used to crawl under the sink too. I think he would love this, especially if we threw a blanket over the top. He likes to be in a “tent”. And its deflatable… bonus for a small house!
D likes that he can take anywhere he wants too as well. The canoe has been in every room depending on where he wants to camp out and get cozy. I blew up the bottom last, which wasn’t smart – the sides were hard for me to push out of the way so I could get to the nozzle. It is very good at applying pressure!
Somehow, the sticky stuff always ends up in their hair…
I know, right? We were reminiscing at dinner last night about the last time something got stuck in someones hair. Declan was SO MAD at Bobby he chewed a huge chuck of Bubble Tape gum and planted it front and center on Bobby’s head. I was not versed in hair cutting then, and cool hair was just starting to be an important social factor. “Don’t upset Declan” became our motto 🙂
I like to move things around however, when your house is smallish and your furniture is large enough to accommodate a 6’4′ man and a woman who is 5’8″ (down from 5’10 in my younger years) there is pretty much only one way the furniture will work. I have spent a lot of covid time rearranging wall hangings and knick knacks though.
Okay, teacher story here. The worst “kid sticks something in hair” experience I had occurred when I was teaching kindergarteners. A boy found a bird egg when we were on a little walking field trip. He smashed it into his hair.It was pretty stinky by the time the field trip was over.
At least the putty didn’t smell!!!
P.S. I am not breaking any speed records but I am really enjoying a “A Tale for the Time Being.”
Eww! A bird egg to the hair is definitely something I would never forget either.
Oh good! I am always nervous recommending a book to others. Something sticks out in a book for me to like it that may not stick out with someone else. It is always a relief to hear positive feedback. I am glad you like it so far!
I’m so an ish person. K was the perfectionist. So much duct tape, 3/4 done jobs and they might last a few more day jobs. You are so good at this parenting gig.
Thank you! You should see how I hang a picture. The thumb is up and one eye is closed as I try to place where I am going to land a nail. Ehhhh, it looks good-ish 🙂
I like the ish idea. And the putty in the hair? I can see that would have been a tough one for Declan. Mum to the rescue!
It was a tough one – thank goodness we could get it all out and his look didn’t change in spite of my clippers 🙂
I have to admit to smiling reading this post, my granddaughter who is 13 is forever changing her room around. I love change myself. What stood out reading your post was just how far Declan has come on by not coming home straight away and saving his tears 😭 until he got home. That’s pretty amazing. ❤️👍🥰
It is! I can’t really say how upset he was at school,. but it did seem to me that he held his tears in and let them all out here. Way to go D! 🙂
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥳
Aww my goodness. Poor Declan. I remember I used to hold my tears too until I got home (if something happened). Well, it looks like at least his hair cut came out looking good, and not good-ish! 😊
Haha! Yes! Thank you! 🙂
I’m new here and totally an -ish person too. You’re a great writer, loved your story! Sad for Declan though I’m glad he pulled through.
Thank you! It is very nice to meet you and I am glad you can relate. I look forward to seeing you out there in the WP blogosphere!
You too!
So sorry about Declan’s hair fiasco! Kudos to you…. for taking scissors in hand! I am also an
“ish” person. Wish I could fold a fitted sheet. You’re not alone! Thanks for sharing.
Hope you all have a good day today. Sending HUGS! 💙
Thank you so much!! HUGS to you too!!
