For my birthday this year, I got a new pair of running shoes.
I have particular needs when it comes to a running shoe. After two heels spurs and two years of plantar fasciitis in both feet, I need a shoe with lots of support and a ton of cushion on the heel. I have a wider foot and always wear men’s running shoes as they seem to have a wider footbed. And they have better colors. I don’t know why it is assumed that I want to wear pink or purple shoes because I am a girl. No thanks. I’ll wear men’s.
I’ve traveled the road of different shoe brands. I used to love my Saucony’s and spent years in those. I switched to Asics for a couple of years and then went to Brooks. Now, I love and swear by my Hoka Bondi’s.
My Bondi’s are expensive. These days, the going price for a new pair is $200, which has made me really shop around and determine if Bondi’s were still the shoe for me. They are. I pool my birthday money and then pick some associated masculine color best suited to my tastes.
When my Bondi’s came in this year, I put the box on my closet shelf. With the quarantine, I wasn’t running as much and never ran a lot (or well) in the summer. “I’ll take these out for my next training cycle,” I thought.
For some reason, this Fall stood out in my mind then. I wasn’t sure what race it would be, but in my mind, I thought I would be in a training cycle for some race right now.
I’m not.
This is the first time in forever I’m not training for some race that is on the horizon.
It’s weird. If I think about it long enough, I can really relate to 2020 Thor.
There are virtual races. Virtual races are races you sign up for online but run at home on your own. Once you are done, you submit your time and then the organizers will send you a medal. I think a lot of regularly scheduled races that got canceled have done this this year.
This past April, I was supposed to run another race with a group of other runners. I have found that I can do these events even though I don’t like to socialize because running is the topic. When our race got canceled, we all signed up for a conquer COVID virtual race.
It was lame. I ran 6.2 miles on my treadmill and submitted my lame time. A few weeks later, my lame medal came in the mail. It wasn’t fun like races are supposed to be. The medal was very unrewarding.
With Declan’s school schedule right now, I can run about thirty minutes every other day. On weekends, the only motivation I can muster is for a walk or two. I am rotating through old running shoes that have gone way past their mileage. My shoes are shot. When I am out on the trails, my mind is back home to the box of shoes in my closet.
Even though I have nothing to train for, I am happy the kids have their sports to keep them active and busy. Catelyn has soccer and Bobby has football and basketball.
And lately, the football coach that made Declan an honorary coach last year has been kind enough to work with Declan in the wrestling world—helping him get in shape and gain confidence physically.
I am always amazed at how outstanding this coach and his family have been for Declan.
I think it is time to accept that I will not be training for a racing goal for some time. It might be time to open my birthday present. The best part? I don’t remember what masculine color I picked. It should be a pleasant surprise!
Congratulations for the shoes and all the best for running.
Thank you!
When I was walking 10+ miles every day I went through my shoes pretty fast. I walked mostly sidewalks and paved trails. I made sure to get good shoes after the first inexpensive pair fell apart after a week. Nike mens cross trainers worked best. I always looked for the sale on the ugly colors.😂 They weren’t a fashion statement🙄
I need to start all over again. I am in horrible shape. All my muscles have atrophied from 6 months of Couch Sittin. My last pair of Nike’s are still fairly unused, so at least I’ve got my shoes.
I’m curious what color you got!🤔💕
Me too! Tomorrow is morning classes, so I hope to see my new shoes on Tuesday morning (weather permitting). If it rains like the guessers are guessing, then Thursday is the big color reveal! My eyes and feet can’t wait!
Congrats on your new pair of shoes. I’m sorry this year has been an usual one. Things will get back to normal again one day and then you’ll shed that Thor 2020 blah-ness again!
That is fantastic you found a wonderful coach for Declan. That is really cool and awesome. Sports is a great way to build confidence as you said!
My motivation has been out the window lately with a lot of things and running fell into the basket too. Which is so weird for me. I planned on pulling out my new shoes and start attacking a new goal this Fall. I guess I will, but it will not be race-related, which is okay. It is just a little different.
I am so happy Declan has this coach in his life. He really takes the time to include Declan and give him a physical sense of being that Declan would not normally pursue. It is really special and thoughtful. We both love it!
I’m sorry about the motivation. But also just wanna say – even though I don’t know you well at all – to cut yourself some slack. This is an unusually strange year and I think we’re all just trying to do our best to get through each day with our sanity. You have a lot on your plate with home schooling three kids! 🙂 This will pass and you’ll be running regularly again one day.
I miss the gym so much. I’ve definitely rounded out like Thor 2020. 🤣
That is one truly special relationship. Glad Declan has that someone in his life!
Thank you!! Me too!!
I feel for you, Robyn. This year has deprived us all of the things we love doing, the things we need to keep us going, and I’m sorry your racing hasn’t panned out as expected. Still, as you say, you’ll have a nice surprise when you see what colour you chose for those new shoes (I’m very fussy when it comes to walking boots too), and I really hope it’s not too long before you can get out and train for racing again. It is nice to see the kids engaged in sport though, and Declan looks amazing doing his training! 🙂
Thank you, Alli! It’s the little things at this point, right? Seeing the color of those shoes and then wearing them is sure to bring a smile to my face. I love that the coach is still working with Declan too. Gives him something to look forward to each week that is physical (physical activity being something that Declan really hates) and it gives him an opportunity to claim a sport to identify with. Really awesome! 🙂
Happy birthday 🎊🎉 enjoy the shoes!
Thank you!
❤️
Funny, I just pushed ‘submit’ on a new pair of Altra Lone Peak 4.5s. I used my birthday money from my dad, as I do every year. At $120 Altras are a pretty good deal, and because I push my pair for a full year, I almost don’t feel bad about spending so much money. Break out your Hokas. I’m sure they’re lonely on that shelf.
They are probably so confused. A new pair of shoes still in the box almost 6 months later? What did they do wrong? Just kidding. Yeah, I need to start wearing my new running shoes. Maybe I will find more motivation to increase mileage.
I can relate! When I find a shoe that works for me (in my case, Morton’s neuromas in both feet make it challenging; always a men’s version for the extra toe space), I stock up, especially when they’re on sale after a year or two on the market. Of course, just as I’m running out of stock I can no longer find any and I have to start over. With no good running shops nearby to try models on for size, I have to read reviews and cross my fingers. At $100+ per pair, that can make for expensive mistakes. I wore Saucony for years as a road runner, but when I moved to trail running they weren’t making trail shoes yet. I wore Montrails for years until I could no longer find the ones I liked. I tried Inov8 & Altras, neither of which protected my toes from rocks. Surfing online I saw some men’s Saucony trail shoes at around $60. I bought a pair and they’re awesome! Perfect trail shoe for me. Can’t believe I wasted two years on the Altras and Inov8s. Now I need to stock up because I suspect they’ve already quit making this model (thus the low price).
Goals: Maybe you can turn your running miles into a fundraiser for some local cause? That might get you out the door on cold winter days!
Declan’s coach is awesome, as is Declan 🙂
When you find the perfect shoe, it is the best feeling. Since mine are so expensive I have done a lot of searches to determine if there were other shoes that provided the same amount of heel support. I just couldn’t find one that seemed worth the trade since I KNEW the Bondi’s were a perfect fit for my needs. That’s not a bad idea! Thank you! I agree – he really is the best 🙂
Of course I read a whole article on running and what to I focus in on? Declan working out with that coach. What a confidence builder for him. I hope this opportunity continues. You will have to share more about this in future posts. I hope you are thrilled with your new shoes when you open them. After this year you deserve them, whether you are in formal training or just running to run.
That video is special. I love that they continue to work with Declan in finding ways to make him feel included and special. Thank you! I plan on a short run tomorrow. I am excited to see what I picked out!
The best part of getting older is the surprises that you should already know but have forgotten…
So true! I am not even going to ruin the surprise by peeking early. I know I looked in on them when they got here, but haven’t checked again in five -six months. It will be a birthday surprise all over again.
With you on shoes and how ones that fit feel. I have big feet and Indian slipper/sandal manufacturers think women’s feet stop growing after a size 7. There aren’t slipper for my size. I loved, loved the US because not only would I find shoes my size, there were even options. And they looked good, not like boats to float me around! Found fit flops and that’s the only kind of shoes I can wear. They’re not easily available here, so friends of mine are kind enough to bring them back for me when they travel. I buy a couple at a time and hoard them, breaking out a new one only when the older one is close to retirement. Fit flop sneakers too now! It’s a pretty good life to walk for hours on vacation without crawling back on painful knees!
Oh gosh, that would be terrible for me as well. I wear a US men’s size 9 or 9.5. I have big feet for a girl – I am thankful I have so many options, you are right!
Bless Declan he is doing a great job 👍 I can’t wait to see what colour you picked for your shoes 😉
Thank you! Me too! I know I looked in the box when they got here but haven’t checked again. Five months later, it’s a birthday surprise all over again 🙂
Happy birthday. Nice story.
I’m sorry your races got cancelled. I have a friend who did the virtual run, because she wanted the medal (collects them). I must say, it does seem a little lack-luster to have to run it by yourself.
It was definitely missing something. I might not have been in the best mood, but the whole thing was kind of unrewarding. If things stay as they are, I may participate in them again – because I need something I think!
I feel your pain!
Sorry to hear of the race cancellations, many of my friends are in similar positions! Much love to you x
Thank you!
Sorry thought I’d commented. Happy birthday. I’ve just switched to Hoka. Not ran with them but certainly they seem to be really comfy for gym work. The team I work with manages road safety for cycle and running events. Small ones right up to things like big TV races. Every event has been cancelled until March. That’s about 20 races. So sad, many of the race organisers are struggling financially , may not be able to restart when things improve.
I’ve wondered about the races. The one I was going to do in April was a Ragnar. And they didn’t cancel – they postponed and refused a refund. I bowed out for personal reasons (the socialization was really concerning me this time). I can most likely be replaced IF they even have it in 2021. It doesn’t seem likely races will start back up for a while.
Go Robyn and kids!! Enjoy the activities!!
Thank you, Jeff!!
Good stuff keep it up… but your right shoes are not a fashion statement but tools for the job… having right fit prevents injuries.
I run in Nike structure 22 now as I over pronate these are best by far for my feet and legs… and I got mens some girly purple ones lol… probably a bit cheaper because blokes don’t wear purple lol
👍🏽
How are you getting on with them since? I’ve found that Salomon Sense Ride 3 are my new pick. I got over 900km out of my first pair. On my second pair now and have 2 more pairs boxed and ready in my spare room.
They’re doing well! I’ll have to check the Salomon Ride 3 out!
