Declan sat on the stool, with the virtual reality mask on, looking left and then right.
Bob, Bobby and I watched on the screen as Declan perused the space terrain and the reality he was witnessing.
Suddenly, his movement stopped, and he sat stiff as a board. I looked to the screen to see what had caught his attention. An alien appeared in his view and was looking at Declan.
Declan continued to stare at the alien. He raised his hand up as if to wave and put it back in his lap.
“Declan, look around,” Bob encouraged.
Declan moved his head slightly to the left, but the alien stayed in view. And despite our encouragement to peruse other areas, Declan stared at the alien until his time was up and we continued our journey through the museum.
But that is not where we started our Christmas break. Our fun adventures started when the kids got out of school and we jumped right into Bobby’s birthday tradition, the Bobby Bowl.
The Bobby Bowl started five years ago. When asked what he wanted for a birthday party he asked for his friends to come over and play a refereed game of flag football. Each year his request has been the same, but the number of attendees have greatly increased.
The kids continued to bring Bobby birthday gifts even though we encouraged them not to and it became too much for one child. So this year, the party became an event and Bobby asked for donations to the Aidan’s Heart Foundation in order to secure an automated external defibrillator ( AED ) for his football team.
Our community was so generous, in the giving of their resources and time for the event to take place, but also in their donations. This year the Bobby Bowl raised over $3,000 which will secure 3 AED’s for the football team. Two to stay on site at the practice and game fields and one to travel to away games. So amazing!
Once the Bobby Bowl came to the end, Bob and I looked at each other and realized we had A LOT to do to get ready for the kid’s actual birthdays and Christmas. But we managed.
Yes, Declan threw the curve ball three days before Christmas and wrote a new list to Santa. Thankfully, Amazon was able to help Santa send the Toony Terrors just in time.
The birthday boy had his special day.
Then we celebrated a very merry Christmas.
Cate and I love the movie Clue, so we were pretty excited to see Knives Out. And were even able to catch Little Women. Great shows!
And one day, we were able to take Declan to The Franklin Institute so he could see the planetarium and all the other science exhibits he enjoys. Including some time with one of his favorite people, Ben Franklin.
On to Catelyn’s special day, which we celebrated in her way.
When Catelyn was in first grade, we invited all the girls in her class to a princess party at our house. Only one girl showed up, and most didn’t even respond to the invite. Since then, Catelyn writes a schedule for the day that we follow to celebrate. So, when Bobby went out with his friends to a New Years Eve party, the rest of us were building a fort and then, putting on puppet shows.
At the end of the night, Bob retrieved the boys from the party and brought them to our house. Seeing a new face, Declan approached.
“I don’t know you, but you are Bobby’s friend. I am Bobby’s brother. My name is Declan. We can be friends too.”
I smiled and laughed a bit on the inside. Of course, this would be how Declan would approach this new social contact in our house with his brother’s friend.
And it brought me back to that alien the popped into Declan’s virtual reality that day at the institute. I am sure he was wondering how was he supposed to approach that social contact? The alien just stared at Declan, and he at the alien wondering what to do next?
Which makes me realize how often I sometimes forget how Declan sees the world, sees others and the rules he follows in his brain.
Thankfully, I have these little reminders of just how special Declan is.
Your son is adorable. Being an autie is not an easy journey. This post made me smile. I am very thankful for moms like you that are understanding.
Thank you so much!
All your children are special, and you are truly blessed.
They are such a blessing – you’re right!
😊
Such a busy time of year for you! I always find those hindsight reminders of how they see their world so helpful. I try to store them for the future to be able to react well. So happy to see your holidays and birthdays went so well for everyone. And your children are all beautiful. Be Blessed!
Me too! Sometimes I just forget all the steps he takes in certain situations, especially when it comes to social interaction. It was such a special time for all the kids. Thank you! You too!
I’m happy to read that there were lots of good times… though a bit horrified after googling Toony Terrors!! Having those in the house would give me the creeps!
Belated happy bday, merry christmas, and happy new year to all!!
Oh, I know! Declan has a thing for horror movies which is totally not my favorite of his interests. Not that he has even seen the movies, yet he likes them. I had to google them myself. Glad to say the toony terrors had a face off with a giant T Rex in play and lost 🙂 Thank you so much!! To you as well!!
It’s wonderful to C smiling. For us it’s so easy to forget how difficult it is for her as well. D clearly liked that present.
He loves to dress up! One more mask for his many ensembles 🙂
It’s interesting to see how your birthday events have evolved through the years. It’s great that Bobby’s birthday became a succcessful fundraiser! And Miss Catelyn – learning to take her birthday into her own hands. Declan, the birthday host with the most. You have a very special crew!
It is! It makes us all glad that the money is going to such good use – and since this is a yearly event, hopefully it will continue to benefit AHF in years to come! I agree for Catelyn too – she has everything written down – from pancakes for breakfast to building a fort at night. She makes her own fun that day and it’s great. Thank you so much! They are all pretty special 🙂
You made it!! Birthdays, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and now you get to relax for about 5 minutes, right?!😂
Good for Declan for making the attempt. Ben still plays along side, but not really “with’ other kids. If only they were on his same page and could help him recreate his favorite videos🤦♀️😂
Awesome for the fundraising Bobby Bowl. That is so beyond cool! Great for the college application too😉
I made it!! Yay!! I know, right? That’s what it feels like. He does do well with the attempt – he knows exactly what to say to introduce himself and his intentions, which is great – and he LOVES Bobby’s friends. They are so good to him that he just gravitates to them. In general, Declan does great with older kids and younger kids – it’s the kids that are his age that have the hardest time “getting” Declan.
Oh my gosh, the lady from the foundation said that too! Bob and I laughed (college seems sooooo far away) and then I realized – not that far away! Oh my word. Not ready for that! 🙂
A refereed flag-football game is brilliant! I never would’ve thought of it…
Over the years, more and more people have gotten involved in helping orchestrate the games. I have to say that I love seeing Bob’s friends walk up in full referee uniforms and all the people that help coach their teams. There were 6 teams this year – biggest bowl yet! Fun times!
My goodness, Robyn, what an amazing few weeks you’ve had and so busy! It all looks so happy and heartwarming though, so it was clearly worth all the hard work. What a wonderful idea Bobby’s Bowl is – a real inspiration, and it’s so good to see the photos of everyone enjoying the festive season and birthday celebrations. Great stuff indeed, and it really gives me a lift to see you all doing so well. Happy New Year to you all. 🙂
Thank you so much, Alli! Happy New Year to you and your family as well! 🙂
I loved reading this, I felt like I was there enjoying it with you all. ❤️
Oh good! Thank you, Elaine!! 🙂
I think it’s a wonderful celebrate. 👏👏
Thank you so much!
