It’s been almost two months since I’ve jumped in on a WWW Wednesday, so I wanted to participate today!
The Three W’s for WWW Wednesday are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
What are you currently reading?
Currently I am listening to Naked Came the Florida Man by Tim Dorsey. I found in my listening to audiobooks that I prefer humorous books and based on the description and review of this book, that was what I was going to get. Funny so far, yeah, I’m just having a problem with the guy reading the book. His voice changes for each character which I find to be distracting and I find his voice acting makes what he is saying difficult to understand. Hopefully it gets better!
I am also reading The Witch Elm by Tana Fench. This was a gift to me from my bestie with rave reviews. I’m almost done, and I have to say the book is very mysterious and exciting. Definitely a page turner and I can’t wait to read how it ends!
What did you recently finish reading?
The last book I read was The Starless Sea by Erin Morgentsern. I was so excited to read this book – the only book I asked for at Christmas. Gosh, I was so disappointed in this book. For one, it took me FOREVER to finish. Every time I tried to read it, it put me to sleep. It felt like the first half of the book were all unrelated separate chapters. Well written and dreamy (literally) but it took forever for the story to unfold and make sense. So bummed with the book, but glad it is over.
I listened to The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man by W. Bruce Cameron, another book meeting my humor check. And boy, this was a funny and still exciting book to listen to. The story had a All of Me (the movie with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin) feel to it in that one of the main characters resided in the main characters brain. And if you are going to write that story and have it be believable, you got to do it right. Thankfully, I feel Cameron did. Really enjoyable.
Since The Starless Sea took forever and a day for me to get through, I moved through my audiobooks pretty quickly. When I first decided I wanted to listen to humorous books, I chose Straight Man by Richard Russo. The prologue alone in this book had me laughing out loud. This book is dry humor at its finest and has also landed itself on the list of books I want to pick up and read since there were so many funny details. Great book!
Before that I read Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven. I enjoyed the book which was about a girl once labeled the world’s fattest teen, her return to school after losing hundreds of pounds, yet still obese and her relationship with a boy who silently suffers from prosopagnosia – the inability to recognize people’s faces. Good story, interesting characters, enjoyable read.
I listened to Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson. I chose this book on its great reviews, although I didn’t really know anything about it except the main plot – when two kids get upset, they are able to set themselves on fire. This book was so funny, lighting the path for all future audiobooks in the humor category, and well done. Because again, if you are going to write such an outlandish story, you got to do right. Fun, enjoyable story!
And finally, the last book I listened to before that was Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane. I really enjoyed this somber story, but I think I would have preferred to read this book instead of listening to it. From Goodreads: A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the bond between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, the daily intimacies of marriage, and the power of forgiveness.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’m not sure, really. If Naked Came the Florida Man doesn’t get any better, I may break from my humor track on audiobooks, or listen to another Russo. And I will just have to sift through my pile of TBR to find what will sit in my hands next!
Thank you, Sam for hosting another WWW Wednesday!
Starless Sea is one of the books I’m most exciting about reading, I was disappointed when I didn’t get it for Christmas so I’m sorry to hear you didn’t love it!

I was so excited for The Starless Sea – I loved The Night Circus and couldn’t wait to read her new book. I just could not get into it. I couldn’t figure out the plot and there was so many unnecessary chapters about nothing, although well written and magical. The book seems to have a ton of people that love it and then those like me that it just drags for. Hope you like it! My bestie gave it five stars. I struggled to give it three.
Lovely recommendations!
Thank you!
Rereading Focault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco.
Nice!
I’m waiting for “The Toll” by Neal Shusterman to be available at the library.
Recently read “Supernova” by Marissa Meyers
I’ve been reading a lot of YA series. 🤷🏼♀️
If you like humor for audio… have you ever read any of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich? They make me laugh out loud. There are like 25+ books in the series so audio should be available at the library.
That is so funny! Just this morning I added Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman to my TBR. And then you bring him up! Great minds think alike 🙂 You know, they came up when I did a search for humorous fiction – I’ll have to check them out!
I was curious about Nothing to See Here. So glad you liked it. And, I’ve heard great things about The Witch Elm. Happy Reading!
Nothing to See Here was a good one, for sure! I’m so excited to finish The Witch Elm – hopefully I can get through it tonight! So good! Happy reading!
I’m so happy to see your WWW! I have already added two of your audiobooks to my TBR – I love a funny audiobook. There is nothing like bursting into laughter when you’re in a loaded bus commuting to work. Hah!
Have a great week! Here is my WWW: http://silverbuttonbooks.com/2020/02/05/www-wednesday-february-5-2020
Haha, that’s true! I’m the crazy person in my car laughing by myself 🙂 Hope you enjoy them!
Hmm. I’ve never read a book with a prosopagnosia character. I might like that.
I thought of you when I was reading it. It’s so interesting. I felt really bad for the character. Was definitely the first time I read a book with prosopagnosia even mentioned, let alone the main character having it.
I had a really awkward encounter in a grocery store the other day. When I got home and told Susan I snubbed someone she says “Why don’t you just tell them why you can’t recognize them” She’s probably right, but it just seems like a lot to get into in a grocery line.
I have really been having a problem reading for at least a year. I’ve gone from a “devour a book in 3 days” kind of person to a person that can’t even get through a book in a 6 week double loan from the library kind of person. I am not sure what is going on with me. I am now reading “The Last Year of the War” by Susan Meissner. I used to love her books, especially “A Fall of Marigolds”. This book is good but I am only half way through and it’s due back to the library in 2 days. :(. I think I used to speed read for the story, not paying much attention to the great language but loving the story. Now that I have written a book, I look more at the writing and my ADHD kicks in before I finish the book???? Maybe?? Maybe I need to just move on to the next book, Olive Kitteridge, which you mentioned in December. I hate not being able to finish a book! Olive, here I come. Thanks for the reading inspiration. Maybe I will recover my reading mojo.
You know that is what happened to me with The Starless Sea. I just would rather look at the stupid thing than read it. Although, I must say, it was beautifully written – just lacked a plot for too long. I hope you love Olive – she is such a character and hopefully will bring a smile to your face and laugh to your heart!
I’m certainly going to read the Straight Man now. Thank you.
Oh good! Hope you laugh as much as I did! I just ordered a $3 used copy off of eBay – can’t wait to read it again 🙂
I haven’t read any Tana French yet, but I’ve heard wonderful things about her work. I’m glad you’re enjoying The Witch Elm. I’ll probably have to check out her books soon. :3 So sorry to hear The Starless Sea didn’t work for you. You’re the second person who said so on their post, so I’m thinking I should maybe lower my expectations when I read that one. xD Happy reading!
Here’s my WWW post.
I see that lots of people really liked The Starless Sea and I really wanted to be one of them. It was well written – but so disjointed. Took forever for a solid plot to form. Could be it was just over my head, which is completely possible too. I’ll have to see what you think when you get to it! Happy reading!
Ooof, disjointed is hard. Sometimes I can do it and sometimes I can’t. Thanks for the heads up, though! I’ll have to keep that in mind when I decide to give it a try.
I love Richard Russo. I love the way he looks at situations. I’ve enjoyed the Tana French I have read. Great reading!
I’m listening to another one of his now – he just cracks me up!
Up until last summer’s Chances Are (which I got an ARC of), I listened to his novels too. The narrator’s voice brings out the sense of humor.
