I have gotten through a few books and wanted to join WWW Wednesday this week!
The Three W’s for WWW Wednesday are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
What are you currently reading?
Right now I am reading The Broken Girls by Simone St. James. I am really enjoying the haunting, suspenseful aspect of the story of a boarding school for “troubled girls.” The school is set to be restored in present day of 2014 after it closed in 1979. The story vascillates to the girls residing in the school in 1950 and to a journalist in 2014 who is following the restoration. In her research she learns of a ghost haunting the premises, bodies are found and she unearths lots of secrets. This is a hard one to put down and I am excited to finish this one soon!
What did you recently finish reading?
Before this I read One Day in December by Josie Silver. This book was okay. It did have a lot of enjoyable moments and clever passages – I was just annoyed with the whole Three’s Company aspect to the story. You know, where there is a complete misunderstanding in the beginning of the story that could be cleared up at the start of the story if people just talked? That kind of annoyance. But this was a light, quick read that I guessed I enjoyed more than I got annoyed.
Before that I read Affinity by Sarah Waters. If you have ever read a book by Sarah Waters, the same basis of the story is present. We follow our heroine in Victorian London. Our heroine this time visits the local prison to meet with the inmates for them to talk with a proper lady. Our heroine becomes infatuated with one of the inmates, a spiritualist. The story is like other Waters novels, she keeps you on the edge of your seat. If I were to say anything else I would spoil the book, so I will leave it at this.
I really enjoyed this book.
Before that I read Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple. I was drawn to this book as I loved Where’d You Go, Bernadette and was not disappointed. One thing Semple has mastered – developing a main character that you laugh and say, “Well hello, hot mess!” Honestly the main character’s actions, thoughts – all just made me laugh. I didn’t care much for the middle of the story and was happy when we came back to our hot mess. Fun read!
Before that I read Know Your Beholder by Adam Rapp. And here we have another main character that is a total hot mess. Although this guy is more like a sad bearded teddy bear that has developed agoraphobia after his wife left him and in the process of making questionable decisions as the landlord of the apartments in his renovated house. Lots of humor, fun to read.
I totally needed a laugh with Know Your Beholder as I was coming off this book. The Power by Naomi Alderman. I could not get through this book fast enough. I was intrigued by the concept of this book of a gender power shift but just hated its application. Not my thing. Happy it’s over.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’m not sure, but from my pile I think I will read Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett. It seems like it may be a bit of a heavy read but a good read. From Goodreads: When Margaret’s fiancé, John, is hospitalized for depression in 1960s London, she faces a choice: carry on with their plans despite what she now knows of his condition, or back away from the suffering it may bring her. She decides to marry him. Imagine Me Gone is the unforgettable story of what unfolds from this act of love and faith.
Thank you guys at Taking on a World of Words for hosting WWW Wednesday!
Quite a book-load, Robyn. I just finished a Jack Reacher novel and have moved on to an old James Bond book. Apparently, if no one is killed in the first three pages, I throw the book away…
Nice! You wouldn’t like mine then – they’d all be in your circular file 🙂
The Broken Girl sounds so interesting!
I am really liking that book – I love a good ghost story and this one is hitting the mark!
Always good to read some book reviews. Affinity looks a must-read. I like Sarah Waters, and the Victorian London setting is very appealing. For now I’m still stuck reading Latin poetry, but when the course is over I can dip into my alternative reading list! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Oh good! Yes, I love Sarah Waters books. Fingersmith has to be in my top ten books of all time I just loved it. The only one I haven’t read (yet) of hers is Tipping the Velvet. I hope to read that one soon! Happy reading!
Tipping the Velvet is brilliant. I’m sure you’ll love it. Funnily enough, I haven’t got round to Fingersmith yet, but there’s time. All the best, Robyn. 🙂
To you too!
You finished a lot this week! Awesome! I still have One Day in December and am saving it for when I need a lighter read. I’m hoping to read a lot of Sarah Waters books later this year, so I will have to keep Affinity in mind. Have a great week of reading! Here is my WWW if interested: https://greatmorrisonmigration.wordpress.com/2019/04/03/www-wednesdays-april-3-2019/
Oh, this is more like what I have read in the past month. I really Sarah Waters – I hope you do too! I’ll check yours out!
I’ve heard such good things about The Broken Girls! Glad to see you’re enjoying it. Sorry you didn’t like The Power, though. It’s been recommended to me so many times, but it seems one of those books where people either love it or hate it, and I’m always wary that I’ll end up DNFing it when so many people I know have enjoyed it. xD
Here’s my WWW Wednesday post.
Yes, I had heard great things about it too and so I was excited to get into it. And then the misuse of power just really wasn’t my thing. Awesome! I will check yours out!
So many tempting books! I loved Sarah Waters’ book The Paying Guests, so I might have to pick up Affinity. I’m adding Imagine Me Gone to my list. Enjoy your reading. Here’s MY WWW POST
I really like The Paying Guests as well – I hope you enjoy Affinity! Or any of hers for that matter. The only one that is a little different than the rest (as it is a ghost story) is The Little Stranger. But still really good! I will check yours out!
Great reading list. Just finishing Terry Pratchetts last book then it’s going to be Bruce Dickinsons autobiography. Suspect these won’t be on your reading lists anytime soon though.
Okay, not going to lie – I had to look up Terry Pratchett. I see he writes fantasy? I haven’t read any of his stuff, but do enjoy Patrick Rothfuss’s work with the Kingkiller Chronicles. The first one is The Name of the Wind. Have you read that? I highly recommend it. I am waiting on baited breath for the fourth in the series to come out. I hear it is finished, titled – but still no date yet for publication or distribution and it is driving me bonkers.
I love them. Didn’t think a fourth one was coming out, what a bonus.
Oh good! I hear the name of the book is to be Doors of Stone – but still no release date. I’ll let you know when I see a date on it!
