OrphanTrain[1]

I wasn’t able to decide what to read so I picked up a book at random.Β  Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline was the winner.Β  I am only a little way through but think I made a good choice.Β  From Goodreads:

[Orphan Train is] a captivating story of two very different women who build an unexpected friendship: a 91-year-old woman with a hidden past as an orphan-train rider and the teenage girl whose own troubled adolescence leads her to seek answers to questions no one has ever thought to ask.

Before Orphan Train I read Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan.Β  I really enjoyed this book which was a fast read.Β  I love the attention paid to the main character and her quirks which were very similar to Eleanor Oliphant.Β  We meet our main character, we watch our character fall in the face of tragedy and watch as those around her lift her up and bring her in.Β  This is a Young Adult book, and I have found I really enjoy reading Young Adult books as they wrap up so nicely – as this one does as well.

I also read I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.Β  Like Counting by 7s this book is Young Adult – which again I didn’t realize when I picked up the book.Β  The book had great ratings and that is all I need to see to want to pick it up.Β  The book is about a set of twins, their special bond, how their special bond breaks after a tragic event and how the bond comes to repair.Β  The dialogue, the thoughts, the metaphors – all just made me smile.Β  I would recommend this book.

Before that I read I Was Anastasia by Ariel Lawhon.Β  Meh.Β  I didn’t really like this book.Β  Was Anna Anderson REALLY the heiress Anastasia Romanov – and survived after her entire family faced execution by the Bolsheviks?Β  Honestly, every chapter that involved Anna Anderson and her quest to gain the identity of Anastasia Romanov – I just grew to care less and less if it were she or not.Β  I DID enjoy the story of Anastasia Romanov and her family under siege. So, I guess there was that plus going for it – but that’s about all.

16240543[1]I had started The Twelve by Justin Cronin.Β  I only got a little way into the story when I realized this story was going to follow the same equation most post apocalypticΒ  stories do.Β  End of the world, those who survived fight for survival from the germ/zombie/terror out to try for utter destruction of the human race.Β  Once the survivors have solidified their stance – what do they do?Β  They begin to turn on each other.Β  (Honestly this whole equation was why I stopped watching The Walking Dead – how many different groups were going to fight for supremacy?Β  Who cares?)Β  So, this book hit a very special shelf only a few of mine have landed – DNF – Did Not Finish (Which is a rare shelf for me – I finished Anna Karenina which has about 500 unnecessary pages in it and TOTALLY should have landed on the DNF shelf!)

Lastly, I finished Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger.Β  I really enjoyed this story and the characters in this book.Β  The book is told from a 13 year old boy, the son of a preacher, about the death that surrounded him and his family in the summer of 1961.Β  The book was a page turner in story, but also in character dynamics.Β  A very enjoyable read!

What do you think you’ll read next?

To be honest, I dunno!Β  I was flipping through WWII era fiction, different character stories and nothing felt right until I picked up Orphan Train.Β  So we will see where that book takes me next!

Thanks to Taking on a World of Words for hosting WWW Wednesday!

  1. Oh I’ll give you the Sun looks fantastic, I also enjoy reading Young Adult and Middle Grade as they seem to have more hope even if they deal with difficult concepts – sometimes increasingly so πŸ’œ

    1. When I looked I’ll Give You the Sun up on Goodreads the people that reviewed the book just adored it – I had to check it out. It was so good! I am just learning (and enjoying) that part of Young Adult books. And the ones I have read HAVE been so enjoyable. They’re great!

  2. Orphan Train was a really good, but really emotional read. Argh, I got so mad over the way the characters were treated! D: It’ll break your heart, but in a good way. Well, mostly. Happy reading!

    1. There were about 200 really good pages. And then there were 200 pages of “I AM Anastasia” to “No you’re not” to “I AM Anastasia” to “Prove it.” Honestly, the story of the Romanov family in exile is the story – the rest to get to the end was annoying. So if you do pick it up – just read half πŸ™‚

    1. As soon as I met the saboteur I was out. Those books are LONG and I was not about to spend my days annoyed in my reading. My reading is the candy I don’t eat – and there was no way I was going to spend my time eating a bunch of black licorice or I think true licorice is all black – so licorice.

  3. The Twelve is the only book I’ve read. I finished the series and enjoyed it, but can’t remember much about the middle book. I was heartbroken when The Passage TV show was canceled. Seems like every time I get interested in a show, it’s canceled – I’m the kiss of death, lol.

    1. I loved The Passage book – I may have quit this one too soon as I do love that kind of story. Maybe I will try again based on your review!

  4. I was thinking of reading Anastasia this summer, now I’m finally done with Augustan literature and Latin poetry, but maybe I won’t bother now… πŸ™‚ Otherwise, this looks an interesting collection. You must read a lot quicker than I do to get all these under your belt in a relatively short space of time, even if one or two finished up on the DNF shelf! Enjoy your next batch of choices… πŸ™‚

    1. I think you would definitely like the Anastasia parts – it is very well written. The banter of Anna just got to me. Thank you! πŸ™‚

      1. I can see why you would feel like that about the banter. I reckon, for me, it would interfere with the history. It’s still a good story though, absolutely. πŸ™‚

  5. I really enjoyed Orphan Train. Christina Baker Kline came to our library last year for a fund raiser. Given the turnout, It seems she is an extremely popular author with the history crowd. I was warned off the Twelve. A friend said it wasn’t worth the effort.
